ARINC 429 to NMEA 0183

(RS232/RS422)

This ARINC 429 to NMEA 0183 converter is in use by many companies who have a requirement to extract navigational data from an ARINC 429 data bus and translate it onto an RS232 or RS422 serial data bus. The exact format for the converted data is NMEA0183 - a marine GPS ASCII format. Thge output can be used with third party mapping products such as Jeppesen, etc.

ARINC 429 to NMEA 0183 Detail

The labels to be converted should be specified by you when requesting a quote.
The typical labels processed by this converter are shown in the table below. The ARINC 429 to NMEA 0183 converter adapts automatically to high, mid or low speed (100, 50 or 12.5kHz) ARINC 429 data and the inputs are opto-coupled for electrical isolation purposes. The ARINC 429 to NMEA 0183 converter is powered from an external 28 VDC (18-72V DC) nominal supply with internal current and thermal (150 ºC) fuse. The inputs are also reverse polarity protected.

The output data is in the form of RS232 and RS422 serial data transmitted at a rates of 4800, 9600, 19200 or 38400 baud. The output string is in ASCII and conforms to NMEA 0183 data standard.

  • Each line begins with a '$' and ends with a CR LF (0DH, 0AH) characters.
  • The ',' comma delimiters are used to separate each particular field. i.e. Third field is Latitude, fourth field is 'N' or 'S' indicator, etc.
  • Each line is transmitted at 4800, 9600, 19200 or 38400 Baud Rate and at a repetition of one line per second.
